How To Bring Back Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man (Without The Amazing Spider-Man 3)

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.Though there were plenty of rumors about just which Spider-characters would feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans weren’t disappointed with who ultimately made it to the screen. Not only did major villains from multiple Spider-Man universes get a chance to play in the MCU, but so did multiple Spider-Men.

One of those is Andrew Garfield’s version of the character, who was last seen playing Peter Parker in 2014. Fans have loved his appearance in the movie as an older (and wiser) version of Peter Parker. Seven years out from his original portrayal, this Peter isn’t an awkward high school student, but an experienced hero still trying to do the right thing. Gaps in his story are filled in for the audience, and there are plenty of fans who hope Garfield will get a chance to play Spider-Man yet again.

When Tobey Maguire starred as Spider-Man, he got a trilogy to bring the character to life. For big fans of the Marvel comic book character, there were undoubtedly things to dislike about that particular trilogy, but almost 20 years later, nostalgia has given the audience a new appreciation for it.

Likewise, when Andrew Garfield took over the role in The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, the character was thought to get a trilogy. In fact, rumors persisted that not only would the character get a trilogy of movies, but that his Sinister Six enemies would get their own movie as well. Unfortunately, lackluster reception to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 nipped all of that in the bud, leaving fans wondering just where the character could have gone once the movie was over.

Spider-Man: No Way Home allowed audiences to see a glimpse of just what happened to that version of Peter Parker as the three big-screen Spider-Men were united for battle on screen. The move has seen audiences praising all three versions of the character, from Maguire to Garfield to Tom Holland.

As a result of the three sharing the screen, there has been a lot of chatter about Garfield having the chance to “redeem” his character. While his presence does allow fans of his movies closure, the character didn’t really need any kind of redemption. Despite what some audience members would think, Garfield’s version of the character has remained very popular with fans - specifically, his turn as Peter Parker.

Garfield’s slightly awkward approach to Peter, his charm, and his chemistry with Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy has always been praised. Audiences asking for him to be allowed to close out the trilogy today are simply echoing what the audience wanted when the third movie didn’t move forward. While the character doesn’t necessarily need to close out the trilogy, there’s still room for him in the Spider-verse, so to speak, of Sony’s movies.

The MCU’s version of Spider-Man isn’t the only Spider-Man related project being made. The Venom movies, Morbius, and the in-development Kraven the Hunter movie are all based on iconic Spider-Man characters. As the mid-credit scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home demonstrates, those movies aren’t necessarily in the main universe of the MCU. Venom, in particular, is in another universe.

It’s not a stretch to think he might just be in Garfield’s corner of the universe since Maguire’s movies already had their own version of Venom. In fact, if fans wanted to see Garfield’s Peter Parker on the big screen again, one of those movies might be the best option.

With an adult Peter Parker in the mix, a wiser and more battle-hardened Peter who still manages to be open with his love and commitment to heroism at that, Venom could have a pretty fascinating relationship with the web crawler. In the comics, the two become enemies largely because Venom is rejected as a symbiotic pair by Peter, but also because one of his hosts dislikes Peter so much. The exact details don’t have to be the same. Venom, after all, is definitely an anti-hero rather than a villain in this iteration.

Though Morbius is likely part of the MCU with Michael Keaton’s Vulture appearing in it, Kraven is still up in the air as an MCU addition or a standalone movie. Placing that in Venom’s world - or in the world of The Amazing Spider-Man - would be a good choice. An adult Peter with years of experience as Spider-Man having to outmaneuver the world’s greatest hunter would make for a great game of cat and mouse. With Sony likely having numerous Spider-related character movies in development, the possibilities to bring Garfield into their multiverse are endless.
