Destiny 2 Reveals Major Changes Coming to Artifact Mods, Masterwork Gear, and More

After its initial delay out of 2021, Destiny 2 players are now just a month away from the launch of The Witch Queen. While Bungie has shown off a number of elements to the upcoming expansion content including the new Glaive weapon, Hive Guardians, as well as the unique destination set inside of Savathun's Throne World. Naturally, it looks like players are going to have plenty of content to play through once the expansion hits later in February.

However, one thing that still isn't inherently clear is the accompanying season to go alongside The Witch Queen. Bungie has hinted at a few changes here and there such as some new content for the Crucible, though there's still a ton that isn't known. It appears the start of the new year is going to be changing that as the first blog post from Bungie has not only confirmed new information in the coming weeks, but has started the process off with some major news regarding artifact mods and masterwork gear.

According to the first TWAB of 2022, Bungie is completely overhauling how artifact mods work in Season 16. Traditionally, as players earned XP by playing Destiny 2, they'd unlock new mods to unlock up to 12 in total. However, in season 16, players are no longer limited to a set number of unlock, meaning that they could potentially unlock all 25 before the season ends which includes some returning favorites like Anti-Barrier Scout Rifles and Bows. Bungie has tweaked the XP requirements to make it a little tougher once players are beyond the 12th mod, but the more XP that is earned, the more mods that can be unlocked.

In terms of Masterworked Armor, Bungie is making it much easier to change the elemental affinity by significantly reducing the cost. Fully masterworked legendary armor can be switched for 10,000 Glimmer and one Upgrade Module, while fully masterworked exotic armor is slightly higher at 20,000 Glimmer and one Upgrade Module. Non-masterworked gear has been left untouched, so the current costs will remain the same.

Lastly, Bungie is altering how players can generate orbs of power, which no longer require a masterworked weapon or exotic catalyst, but can be triggered by specific helmet armor mods. When applied, players will be able to generate orbs to all equipped weapons of a particular damage type. Better yet, players can essentially use this new system to cover multiple weapons that share a specific damage type as well as weapons that can change elemental damage like Hard Light, Borealis, or Osmosis perk weapons.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
