Hawkeye Star Vincent D'Onofrio Responds To Criticism Of MCU's Kingpin

While Vincent D'Onofrio's return as Kingpin in Marvel Studios' Hawkeye has left many fans satisfied, the character's debut in the MCU has received plenty of backlash as well. Now, the actor has opened up about such criticisms.

In Hawkeye's finale, while featured only in a few scenes, viewers were quick to pick up on Kingpin's increased yet unrealistic strength. The villain was able to survive many blows that would've surely killed anyone else, and some fans weren't thrilled by change to Kingpin's strength level.

During the final battle between Kate Bishop and Kingpin, the crime boss survives an arrow to the chest and being directly hit by a car, not mention the explosion that left him with little more than a limp. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com's ComicBook Nation podcast, D'Onofrio shared his thoughts on the situation. "You know I learned recently, a couple of the fans, they were very excited about it, they were commenting about the strength that I have," said D'Onofrio. "Because I'm throwing Kate [Bishop] around and stuff. But I totally forgot. I just saw a clip on Twitter of me and Charlie [Cox] fighting in [Stephen] DeKnight's first season. Obviously, he's an incredible director. He helped develop the character of Wilson Fisk."

D'Onofrio would further recall a particular scene in Daredevil that proves his heightened strength has always been there from the start. "There's a scene that we shot on an alley, in a street in Brooklyn, where I'm literally throwing Daredevil (Charlie) through the air. Like, I'm picking him up and swinging him 15 feet into a garbage can," D'Onofrio recalled. "I do it a few times in that fight. It's no different, it's really not. So, I keep saying that it's the same Fisk that was in Daredevil. It's the same canon, but people get confused about things. I understand."

With Charlie Cox's appearance as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the MCU has opened many doors that will now tie into previous Marvel shows that were separate from the MCU, while also hopefully seeing the return of many fan favorite heroes and villains. Just how he will be implemented into future MCU stories is still unclear, but in the meantime, fans will just have to rewatch Hawkeye and Daredevil to see D'Onofrio's Kingpin before he makes his return in future projects for Kevin Feige.

As for Hawkeye, the series follows Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton / Hawkeye post-blip in New York City during the Holidays, as he is forced to team up with the young archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to stop enemies from his past when he was Ronin in Avengers: Endgame. The series was met with much praise from critics, as it currently has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hawkeye is now available on Disney Plus.
