If there's one person who knows how to market his own movies and shows, it's James Gunn. Granted, at this point it's more like "movies and show," seeing as he's made numerous films and is just now coming up on the premiere of his first television series. So naturally, he's promoting the ever-loving love out of his upcoming HBO Max spinoff from The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker.
The John Cena-led series already looks to be one of Gunn's most ambitious projects yet, from its production values to its stellar cast. But aside from the obvious stuff, it looks like he's got some new ideas that tie into what fans have come to expect from the energetic filmmaker. Just like with his Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Peacemaker has a bit of a focus on its soundtrack. So, naturally, Gunn wants the whole world to enjoy it.
Taking to Twitter, Gunn recently shared a Spotify playlist featuring music from the Peacemaker soundtrack. Now, for those unfamiliar with his style, this isn't just a musical score with sweeping orchestral tracks made for the show. It's a checklist of hard-hitting anthems, acoustic jams, and even passionate ballads ranging from the '80s all the way to right dang now, and the soundtrack's eclectic reach is sure to match the feel of the show itself.
Highlights include classics like "Don't Treat Me Bad" by Firehouse and the aggressively enjoyable "Summertime Girls" by Y&T. But the main focus seems to be contemporary, with tracks like the addictively energetic "Boots on Rocks Off" from Dust Bowl Jokies and the heavy-hitting "Choose Me" by BAND-MAID. Of course, there's plenty in-between, like The Quireboys' emotional early-2000s entry "I Don't Love You Anymore," and that's all just scratching the surface.
The best part is, this playlist only covers the first 3 episodes of Peacemaker. So if interested listeners find they like what they hear, there's plenty more where that came from. Gunn seems to have put genuine care and thought into crafting this list, proving that he clearly has a real passion for music (as if that wasn't obvious from Guardians of the Galaxy's excellent soundtracks). So even if somebody isn't up for watching Peacemaker, this might be enough to give an impression of the passion behind it.
If nothing else, these offerings should make for some more than decent driving tunes. Granted, if the playlist is anything like the meltdown-prone Peacemaker himself, maybe it would be best not to listen while surrounded by standstill traffic. The chaos could be catastrophic.
Peacemaker debuts its first 3 episodes January 13th, 2022, on HBO Max.
