A Quiet Place Spinoff Film Adds Pig Director Michael Sarnoski

After what seemed like a perfect directing fit with Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special, Loving) on board, Paramount Pictures has found its replacement. Pig director Michael Sarnoski is on board to helm the untitled A Quiet Place spinoff project.

The A Quiet Place franchise follows the Abbott family as they struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters with sharp hearing that hunt any sounds. What appeared to be another generic monster horror film turned out to be one of the biggest and most successful films of 2018, as A Quiet Place's original and fresh story captured many audiences' attention, and would eventually expand to an even more successful sequel with A Quiet Place Part II (a film that set pandemic records at the time of its release and was met with a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Deadline reports that Sarnoski is in negotiations to helm the A Quiet Place spinoff, and he would also serve as the writer of the film. Other than being a spinoff film rather than a threequel and also based on an idea from John Krasinski (who starred in and directed the first two films), not much is known about the upcoming project. While not confirmed, Emily Blunt and Krasinski will likely not reprise their roles, as the spinoff is hoping to expand on the universe presented in the first two films and allow Paramount to build on something for years to come.

Reports also indicated that Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller will produce the A Quiet Place spinoff alongside Krasinski. While Krasinski's involvement was a crucial part of the success of the A Quiet Place films, Sarnoski will no doubt add his unique take on the monster-filled world. His most recent feature, Pig, was released this past summer and stars Nicolas Cage as a truffle hunter who returns to his roots to find his beloved pig after she is kidnapped.

It may not seem like the most exhilarating story at first, but the film has gone on to receive much acclaim from critics (currently has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes), with many praising Cage's engaging performance as well as Sarnoski's taut direction. In fact, Sarnoski received the National Board of Review Award for Best Directorial Debut and a nomination for Best Feature at the Gotham Awards. Pig is now a big contender for this year's awards season.

There is no telling when production on the spin-off film will begin, as the pandemic combined with the countless delays in the industry has created a sense of uncertainty, but with Sarnoski's attachment to the film just announced, a release sometime in 2023 sounds likely. For now, however, fans will have to catch up on the tension-filled world of A Quiet Place.

A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II are streaming on Paramount Plus and Amazon Prime.
