No Way Home At The Box Office

Scream has some promising box office projections coming its way for opening weekend. So much so, that the film is expected to beat out Spider-Man: No Way Home from it’s current number one slot. Many Marvel fans may find this news shocking, especially since Spider-Man: No Way Home marks the end of an era in many ways.

Spider-Man: No Way Home also really honed in on the level of nostalgia that fans had been craving by finally featuring all three live-action versions Spider-Man co-existing at once on the big screen. However, big fans of the Scream franchise might argue that the same sense of nostalgia is present here as well, and its banking at the box office.

Per Deadline, Scream is expected to bring in around $20 million-plus solely in its opening weekend over the four-day MLK holiday. Spider-Man: No Way Home has been on quite the winning streak since it’s release in December of 2021. If Scream does meet the expected projections for opening weekend, it will become the first movie to defeat Spider-Man: No Way Home's number one spot for four consecutive weeks in a row.

Although the title, Scream, almost suggests that it’s one of the first films, it’s actually the fifth film in the Scream series. The title for the fifth film pays a nostalgic-rendering homage to the first movie in the franchise, directed by Wes Craven back in 1996. Sadly, Craven is not here today to finish what he started, although the intent was clearly there. Craven returned to the director’s chair for Scream 2-4 but ended up passing away four years after Scream 4 was made.

Carrying on the legacy of Scream are directors Tyler Gillett and Matt-Bettinelli-Olpin, who are both most known for their 2019 horror-comedy Ready or Not. The Scream movies still stand as some of the most iconic horror films to this day despite more modern thriller films being made regularly. The first three Scream flicks are among the top highest-grossing slasher movies of all time. Although Scream 4 brought in significantly less viewers than the previous films, the franchise has the horror lane at the theater locked down.

Due to the pandemic, the movie theater industry is still struggling to recover. A lot of the select films that are being shown in theaters currently are either from the MCU and Disney, or they are part of long-standing franchises such as Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It’s clear from the box office records thus far, and from the types of movies that are consistently being made, that viewers are yearning for a trip down memory lane from their childhood. The Scream franchise possesses that sentimental feeling while also bringing in a sense of excitement due to the terrifying nature of it’s spooky content.

Scream will be in theaters on January 14th, 2022.
