Wendy's Roasts the Overwatch League With Dig at Delayed LEGO Set

The Overwatch League isn’t set to return with its 2022 season for another few months, but that didn’t stop it from getting competitive online. Recently, Overwatch’s esports league went up against fast food chain Wendy’s in a friendly battle of roasts. Unfortunately for it, it ended up getting served like one of Wendy’s burgers.

Things haven’t been all that great for Blizzard’s hero-shooter franchise lately. For starters, Overwatch 2 is currently facing an indefinite delay, and with new content for the first game basically nonexistent, fans are left with little to look forward to. The current situation with Activision Blizzard hasn’t helped either, as the accusations of sexual harassment and toxicity by the company’s leadership have cooled a lot of fans’ excitement for anything the company has planned.

The Overwatch League got a brutal, if rather hilarious, reminder of this this week courtesy of Wendy’s. To celebrate National Roast Day this week, the chain took to Twitter and invited people to dish out their best insults. Among them was the League’s Twitter account, which opened by saying, “You’re just like your burgers. Square.” While a pretty biting remark, Wendy’s was more than ready for it, clapping back with “Can't wait for those new LEGO sets,” in reference to the Overwatch 2 LEGO sets that were delayed indefinitely over concerns about Blizzard’s workplace culture.

Judging from the replies for both posts, Wendy’s is the clear winner here, with most agreeing that it dealt the hottest roast. It was such a mean burn, in fact, that even multiple Overwatch League teams, including the Florida Mayhem, Shanghai Dragons, and Washington Justice, responded with memes and GIFs poking fun at the League’s defeat.

For others, though, the roast-off only served to refuel their frustrations with the current state of Overwatch. It used to be that the game received a fairly robust stream of new content on a regular basis with the addition of new characters, maps, and modes. With the development team seemingly focused on Overwatch 2, however, that stream has largely slowed to a trickle, with the occasional batches of new Overwatch skins being the most substantial updates for a while now.

Fans are eager for something new and big to inject some life back into Overwatch, and while it remains to be seen when they’ll be able to play Overwatch 2, they should be able to see it in action soon. The 2022 Overwatch League season is slated to kick off this spring and will see teams competing in an early build of Overwatch 2, which should give fans a clearer idea of the changes they have to look forward to in the sequel.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
